In April, 1946 Charley Burley (reigning California State Middleweight Champion), fought 'Oakland' Billy Smith (reigning California State Light-heavyweight Champion), over ten rounds

This was the second time the pair had met (Burley had won over ten-rounds on October 8th, 1945 in San Francisco), and it was the only time a bout featuring Charley Burley was ever filmed.



 

Charley was due to fight Sugar Ray Robinson in Pittsburgh on May 10th, 1946 but Robinson pulled out (again), citing lack of money.
